True spiritual power comes not by gifts or effort, but by surrender to the Lordship of Christ. Learn how moving from self to Spirit unlocks victorious living.
Why So Many Christians Struggle
Have you ever wondered why so many believers are filled with the Holy Spirit, yet live weak, defeated lives? They attend church, pray, and know the Word, yet lack power and victory.
The answer is simple but often ignored: the Lordship of Christ has not been settled. Many want the Spirit’s gifts, but not His government. They want blessing, but not surrender.
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”
— Luke 6:46, NIV
Until self is dethroned and Christ enthroned, the Spirit’s power remains limited.
1. The Clash Between Self and Spirit
From the beginning, man has wrestled with this choice: self or God.
- Adam chose self: “You will be like God” (Genesis 3:5).
- Jesus chose God: “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42, NIV).
The self-life is subtle. It shows up in pride, control, and independence. Even good deeds done in self-strength lack eternal value.
Lesson: The self-life is the greatest hindrance to the Spirit-life.
2. Indwelling Spirit, Limited Operation
Every believer receives the Holy Spirit at salvation, but not every believer knows His fullness.
- The Spirit dwells in us, but He won’t dominate where Christ is not Lord.
- Many Christians have the indwelling Spirit, but not the controlling Spirit.
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 5:18, NIV
This “filling” happens when Christ is Lord over every area of life.
3. Surrender: Giving Up All Rights to Self
Spiritual power is not about holding on but letting go. Consecration means giving up all rights to self.
- Your plans, ambitions, finances, and emotions must be placed under Christ’s authority.
- Until Christ owns it all, the Spirit cannot release His full power.
Missionary Example: Mary Slessor in Calabar gave up her right to comfort, marriage, and safety. By surrendering fully, she walked in supernatural power to transform communities and end cultural evils like the killing of twins.
Lesson: Where there is no surrender, there is no power.
4. The Spirit’s Power Released Through Lordship
When Christ is truly Lord, the Spirit works unhindered:
- Boldness in witness – like Peter at Pentecost (Acts 2:14, NIV).
- Victory over sin – the Spirit crucifies the desires of the flesh.
- Fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience… evidence of true transformation.
Practical Analogy: Think of a car. The Holy Spirit is the engine, but Christ as Lord is the driver. If self stays at the wheel, the car will crash. When Christ drives, the Spirit’s power propels us safely forward.
5. Interrogatory & Revelational Questions
- Is Christ Lord over my time, money, relationships, and ambitions—or do I still hold the keys?
- Am I satisfied with having the Spirit indwell me, or do I long for Him to control me?
- Do I still live from self, or from Spirit?
6. Lessons for the Postmodern Church
- Gifts without surrender produce chaos. Lordship must precede power.
- Self-will must be crucified. Independence is the enemy of spiritual dependence.
- Christ must reign in every area. Lordship is not partial—it is total.
- Mission demands surrender. Without laying down our lives, the Spirit’s work in nations will be limited.
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23, NIV
Lordship Unlocks Power
The secret of spiritual power is not gifts, talent, or effort. It is the Lordship of Christ. When self is crucified and Christ enthroned, the Spirit flows unhindered.
This is the Church’s strategy in mission: move believers from self to Spirit, from independence to Lordship, from weakness to power.
The normal Christian life is Christ reigning in us, through the Spirit, for the glory of God.
