The Crisis of the Substituted Life
The greatest tragedy in the modern church is not that we are weak, but that we are "double-minded." We have mastered the art of the religious mask, acting as "Peter the Rock" within church walls while allowing "Simon the Old Man" to run our lives in the marketplace. This teaching explores the revelational truth of Galatians 2:20—that the Christian life is not an improved version of our old selves, but a substitutional life where Christ lives through us. It is time to stop the chameleon act and start living the single, Holy Spirit-directed life.
Identifying the "Simon" Within
My dear brothers and sisters, listen closely. We are living in a generation where the "snail" of human nature has become too comfortable. When the atmosphere is spiritual, we crawl out, showing our religious colors. But the moment someone offends us at work or a family member triggers our "bloodline" traits, we retreat into our old shells and act as if we never knew Christ.
Look at the life of the Apostle Peter. Jesus gave him a name that meant Stability (Peter), yet whenever he acted out of his old nature, Jesus called him by his old name: Simon.
Question: Why did Jesus say, "Simon, the devil desires to sift you," instead of calling him Peter?
Answer: Because the devil cannot sift the "Rock" (the new man); he can only sift the "Reed" (the old man).
When you tell someone in anger, "Don't take me for granted, I have a hot temper, it runs in my family," you are introducing yourself as Simon. You are telling the world that the "old man" is still alive and well, and that your family bloodline is stronger than the Blood of Jesus.

The Mystery of the Redirected Life
Many believers today think Christianity is just a moral upgrade. They try to "patch up" Simon to make him look like Peter. But the Bible doesn't teach self-improvement; it teaches execution.
Galatians 2:20 says: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." Question: If you are truly crucified, who is that person getting angry at the market?
Answer: It is a "ghost" of the old man that you have refused to leave at the Cross.
We must live in the consciousness of the Substitutional Life. This means the life you are living now is not yours; it is a redirected life. When you are about to shout at your spouse, or cheat on a business deal, or compromise in the office, you must stop and ask: "Is this the resurrected Christ living through me, or is this the snail crawling back into Simon’s shell?"
The Chameleon vs. The Conscience
The modern believer has become a chameleon, changing colors to survive.
- In Church: You are the "Peter" of worship.
- In Business: You are the "Simon" of manipulation.
- In Private: You are the "Snail" of hidden habits.
But the Holy Spirit is calling us to a Single Life. Holiness is not just what you do when the Pastor is watching; holiness is the consistency of Christ’s life in you, whether you are in the dark or under the spotlight.
Question: How do we bridge the gap between our church life and our "real" life?
Answer: By developing a Christ-Consciousness.
Before you act, pause. Ask yourself: "If Jesus were wearing my clothes, standing in this market, or sitting at this computer, would He do what I am about to do?" If the answer is no, then "Simon" is trying to resurrect. You must remind yourself: "That man is dead. I am now Peter. I am a Rock."
Real-Life Lessons for the Modern Believer
- The "Family Trait" Trap: Stop blaming your character flaws on your earthly lineage. If you are born again, you have a new DNA. You cannot be "hot-tempered" and "Holy Ghost filled" at the same moment. One must give way to the other.
- The Workplace Witness: Your coworkers shouldn't be surprised to find out you are a Christian. If your "Simon" is the one they see from Monday to Friday, your "Peter" on Sunday is a lie.
- The Market Integrity: Does your price change when the customer isn't looking? If so, you are living the double life. Christ-in-you doesn't cheat to prosper.
The Single, Integrated Life: From Simon to Peter, the Unified Rock
The Way Forward: Living the Holy Ghost Directed Life
Beloved, the world is waiting for a manifestation of the sons of God—not the "actors" of God. The double life is a weary life. It is time to stop the internal tug-of-war between Simon and Peter.
The Solution:
- Surrender the "Snail": Stop retreating when the world hits you. Stand firm in your identity.
- Kill the "Chameleon": Choose one color—the color of the Blood. Be the same person everywhere.
- Embrace the Substitution: Every morning, remind yourself: "Today, I am not living. Christ is living through me."
When we live with the constant conscience that our life is a "redirected life," we will no longer find it easy to switch between Simon and Peter. We will become the "Rock" that Jesus intended—stable, holy, and undivided.
Final Thought: Jesus is praying for you, just as He prayed for Simon. He is waiting for you to be converted from your double life so that you can finally strengthen your brethren. Will you let Simon die today?
